For Those Who Hate Their Birthday

By Ellie Drabnis on March 26, 2017

This is for all those out there who hate their birthday.

I hate my birthday. There, I said it. What I’d like to do on that day is hide under my blankets, not have to talk to anyone and just be alone. It’s no mistake that I have my birthday hidden on my social media accounts. Sure, I did it partially because I was and am still paranoid about identity theft but more because I hate my birthday.

Why? Well, to put it in the simplest terms, too many horrible childhood birthday experiences and none that made me smile up to this point. And well, I’ve just become disillusioned with the whole ‘birthday party blah blah’ as a whole. Plus, it’s only a year closer to death and while that may sound morbid, not having any nice memories of the thing makes it hurt more. And while this isn’t true for everyone, I share my birthday with a relative who I know isn’t fond of me at all and that again makes it worse. Plus, I’ve joked numerous times to friends and relatives that I must’ve done some pretty bad things in my past life to have to share a birthday with that person.

Regardless, there are plenty of things that shouldn’t be said to those of us who hate our birthdays.

All we want is to be left alone.

But, then there are a few other things that our friends/family who don’t necessarily want to accept that we don’t like our birthdays miss altogether and they are:

1. Don’t write it on our Facebook wall (or via other social media)

And, if we don’t have our birthday up and it comes up with ‘ask’ when you click on our profiles, please don’t even think about posting it on our walls. NO! The post will be deleted accordingly. I have done that since people were wishing me ‘happy birthday’ via Facebook. I immediately delete such posts because I don’t want them on my wall and again, why else would I have my birthday hidden on Facebook?

2. Don’t try to change our minds

Really, stop that. Don’t advise us to stop expressing how we feel over the day because if you’re asking us to ‘lie’ then you’re asking us not to show our true feelings and that is only more hurtful than not. Please, if you’re adamant over the whole ‘it’s our day’ thing then leave us and our feelings alone.

3. If you really must send a text message okay, but …

But, leave it at that. Don’t make a big fuss outside of a text because that is the last thing in the world we would possibly want. Those of us who hate our birthdays only want some peace and quiet; please be kind and give us the gift of such a thing.

If you really must send a text, fine. But, leave it at that.

Once more, I hope this resonates with all those out there who hate their birthday.
